Tauraroa Area School Gymnasium Redevelopment

Client
Tauraroa Area School
Project description
A project that was a decade in the making, Scope worked alongside key stakeholders to complete the facility that will serve the school community for many generations to come.

“This project was an idea discussed back in 2011 by myself, Darren Tantau, Tauraroa Area School Principal Grant Burns and Board of Trustees Property Manager, Greg Walker.  Throughout the past decade Scope worked continuously for the school, and despite many challenges, the team persevered knowing the project would meet the needs of the school and serve the school community for many generations to come.  ”

Trevor Griffiths

From 2011 to 2016 the team from Scope had worked with the school on establishing the scope for the project, presented a comprehensive business case supporting the projects’ viability and negotiated the school’s 10 Year Property Plan to the Ministry of Education.

The procurement plan determined that the best possible outcome would be to use a design build process and from this four valid tenders were received.  Northland-based contractor Guyco Construction were chosen as the lead contractor based on a novated design.  Guyco used architectural practice Mandeno Design and Engineering firm, RS Eng Ltd as their main consultants.

Scope conducted early contractor involvement, managed a complex design and construction tender process and oversaw the project through all design phases to completion. Despite budgetary and logistical challenges the building was successfully completed on time for the start of the school year in 2021.  The Gymnasium was nominated as a finalist of New Zealand Institute of Building (NZIOB) Awards for projects between $0.5M and $5M in 2021.

“Guyco Construction (2019) Ltd acted in the role of Main Contractor for the design and construction of the new gymnasium for Tauraroa Area School. In this capacity we worked closely with Scope in their role as the Project Manager and found Trevor and his team were consistently fair, objective and professional.

Over the duration of the project there were nineteen formal variations many of which involved numerous iterations and innumerable communications between the client, PM and Contractor. We felt our requests for variations and information were given a fair and objective hearing and that we were always kept up to date with clear and current communications.
With multiple client instigated changes, we expect that the project budget likely came under some pressure, but the Scope team always addressed any issues that arose with clear and consistent communication supported by accurate information and good judgement.

Overall our experience dealing with Trevor, Darren and the rest of the Scope team was both pleasant and professional and we know that as the project managers they played at least as big a part in delivering an excellent outcome for the school as we did.

We can only hope that all our future projects are managed and delivered as well as this one.”

Cameron Harvey, Managing Director Guyco Construction (2019)
