Dargaville Primary School
“Our initial thoughts were to demolish these 3 buildings and build new but this was not possible with the funding available. We moved forward with an alternative plan. The bones of the buildings were solid so we started there and created 3 modern classrooms which are weathertight, functional and fit to last another 50 years. The result was delivered very economically in comparison with a new build.”
The classroom block had 3 separate buildings with asbestos cladding, low pitch roof, faulty aluminum windows and countless significant internal issues. The redesign added a shared deck accessed by sliding doors along the back, which leads directly to the field/turf, a new roof, joinery, weatherboard cladding, insulation and internal fit-out. The internal fit-out included new wet areas, suspended ceiling, floor and wall coverings, re-wiring, lighting and fitted storage units. The frames, floor, some of the window and door joinery, and the heat pumps were retained to control costs.
